Coaching Clients to Success: How Damon Heller Brings a Teammate Mentality to Retirement Plan Advising

Registered Investment Advisor, Damon P. Heller AIF®, CPFA®, played collegiate basketball. During his time on the court, he learned lessons that still influence his work today. That is: great teams aren't built on individual talent alone. They're built on communication, trust, and most importantly, having each other's backs.

More than two decades later, Damon carries that same mentality into his work as a retirement plan advisor at The Comprehensive Companies in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. “Being on a team, you're a partner,” Damon said. “We're a partner to our clients. And a good partner, like a good teammate, makes sure we've got their back, no matter what.”

We sat down with Damon to learn how his teammate mentality sets his practice apart. Let’s dive in.

A Practice Built on Service

The Comprehensive Companies has been a trusted name in Lancaster for nearly 50 years, and Damon has spent his tenure deepening the firm's focus on retirement plan advising. With a client base spanning blue-collar manufacturing, construction, and a growing dental practice niche, the firm has built its reputation on something simple: being there when clients need them.

“I call it concierge-level service,” Damon explained. “Each retirement plan has its own single point of contact. You don't get lost in 800-land, saying 'representative, representative, representative' 16 times before reaching a human being.”

For Damon, time is the most valuable commodity any client has, and protecting it is a non-negotiable priority for him and his team. Whether it's a quick question from a client or a concern from an employee in the plan, his standard is clear: pick up the phone, respond to the email, get it done. It’s all about these behind-the-scenes assists.

Time is the most valuable commodity, and no one wants to waste it. If we can help clients get something accomplished in a minute versus 30 minutes, that goes a long way.

Knowing the Game So Clients Don't Have To

The best players do their homework before they ever step on the court. Damon believes one of the most valuable things an advisor can be is current. That means knowing what's changing in the retirement plan landscape before it affects clients, and translating that into clear, actionable guidance.

He says he is particularly focused on details that many business owners simply don't have the bandwidth to stay on top of: Roth catch-up contributions for Highly Compensated Employees (HCEs), auto-enrollment and auto-escalation adoption, state mandate deadlines, and the tax credits available to businesses launching plans for the first time.

His approach to client education is equally hands-on. Damon's team meets individually with both clients and their eligible employees—sometimes right at the client's office, in a conference room, or around a kitchen table—to walk through savings goals, risk tolerance, and the often-overlooked reality that healthcare is one of the biggest expenses people face in retirement.

He also helps coach clients and their employees through the fundamentals. “We schedule a day with our companies, send out a signup sheet, and meet with employees in 15-minute blocks,” he said. “We make sure their savings rates are what they want and that their risk tolerance hasn't changed.”

Making Business Owners Look Like MVPs

When Damon describes what separates a good retirement plan experience from a great one, his answer is telling: “My job is to make business owners look like a rock star to their employees.”

Happy employees make for happy business owners. And for the business owners Damon works with (for whom the 401(k) often sits at the bottom of the daily priority list), having an advisor who handles plan administration, the questions that come up, and stays ahead of the changes…is the whole point.

Most business owners aren't thinking about their retirement plan on a Tuesday morning. Having someone that they trust that’s thinking about it is the whole value.
